To School or Not to School?

Posted by the Strawboss on March 27, 2012 in ask the Strawboss

Dear Strawboss,
I’m a Eric, a 19 year old male from Toronto, Ontario. I’ve already graduated high school, but I’m stuck at a bit of a crossroads in my life. There are programs I have considered enrolling in college for, but nothing I really have my heart set completely on. Would it be better for me to follow through with one of these programs, or do you think I should put off the next phase of my life and work instead? Would it be better to work and make money instead of going off to college for something I’m not entirely sure I even want to pursue? Thanks for the help! Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
Eric

Dear Eric,

I don’t advocate putting off education. It’s a lot like holding in a bowel movement. Sure you can always do it later, but it’s gonna be harder and a lot more painful.

I understand that you don’t know what you want to do with your life. I still don’t know what I wanna do and I’ve been going to community college for 12 years! Even still, I don’t think you should completely leave school behind as you may get caught up in making money and fall victim to the fallacy that you don’t need an education. But maybe you will get it together an go back. But then again, maybe you won’t. Perhaps you should try a few general course and to get a feel for what you want to do. Write down your interests and see which of those could be parlayed into a viable career. That should help you get going in the right direction. If you do decide to put off school, make it for a set amount of time and promise yourself you will return. Trust me, you don’t want to be 45 and taking orders from a 27 year old who had the sense to stay in school.

I am the Strawboss.
